WCHS Bulldogs earn gold medal at ASAA rugby provincials

On the weekend, the Winston Churchill High School Bulldogs rugby team took home another provincial title.
Churchill defeated Rundle College on Saturday in the Tier 2 championship game, in Calgary, to cap off an undefeated weekend.
The Bulldogs opened play Friday morning and squeaked out a tough 19-17 win over Frank Maddock. Later in the day, Churchill cruised past Banff Community 35-7, to set up a championship date on Saturday against Rundle College.
Winston earned a 36-7 victory in the final, to take home the Tier 2 gold medal.
The WCHS Griffins also advanced all the way to the final, but fell 31-8 to Sturgeon, and took home silver.
Churchill defeated Bowness by a score of 31-10 in the tournament opener, and then beat Notre Dame 48-5 in the semifinal.
Chinook High School’s boys team won its opening game, as the Coyotes took a 28-12 win over Bishop Carroll in Tier 1 play.
The Coyotes then fell 17-0 to Holy Trinity Academy in the semifinal.
Chinook rebounded with a win in the third-place game over McNally.
Chinook’s girls team also earned a bronze, with a Saturday win over Notre Dame in the Tier 2 tournament.
The tournament kicked off with a 37-5 win over Holy Trinity Academy, before a 24-0 loss in the semis to Sturgeon.
Lethbridge Collegiate Institute’s Clippers took fifth place in Tier 1 after a 38-14 opening-round loss to Notre Dame, a 37-8 win in the consolation semifinal over Charles Spencer and a victory over Bow Valley in the consolation championship.
