Curriculum

All schools in Lethbridge School Division follow the Programs of Study that are created by Alberta Education. Teachers use a variety of methodologies to engage students and further their understanding of curricular objectives and meet their diverse needs.  If you have questions about Curriculum, please contact the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Erin Hurkett, at Erin.Hurkett@lethsd.ab.ca.

Pilot Elementary Report Card

Several teachers in schools across the Division will be piloting the new elementary report card for the 2024/2025 school year. As part of our commitment to enhancing student learning and growth, we are introducing a new outcomes-based pilot report card that will be aligned with the updated Alberta curriculum.
Alberta curriculum has been changed to align with the latest educational standards and to support the development of 21st century skills. This includes clearer expectations for student learning and progress at each grade level.
The new report card will be outcomes-based, meaning it will assess and report on each child's achievement in relation to specific learning outcomes defined by the new curriculum. This approach is designed to provide a clearer and more detailed picture of each child's progress and areas of growth.

Early Years Assessments

Students in Kindergarten to Grade 3 will be assessed using Alberta Education screening tools throughout the 2024/2025 school year. The LeNS (Letter Names and Sounds  Screening), CC3 (Comprehensive Screening for Early Literacy) and Numeracy Assessment are key tools developed by Alberta Education to support early learners in grades K-3. The LeNS specifically targets early literacy skills, assessing aspects such as phonemic awareness, letter recognition, and reading fluency to identify students who may need additional support in developing strong reading skills. The CC3 offers a detailed evaluation of early literacy development, including phonological awareness and comprehension, helping educators pinpoint specific areas for intervention. The Numeracy Assessment, on the other hand, focuses on foundational mathematical skills, assessing students' understanding of basic number concepts and problem-solving abilities. These assessments work together to provide a comprehensive view of each child's learning needs, enabling educators to tailor instruction and support effectively.
