Jim Kerr appointed vice-principal at Coalbanks Elementary School

Lethbridge School Division is pleased to announce the appointment of Jim Kerr as vice-principal at Coalbanks Elementary School, commencing the 2025/2026 school year.
Kerr has 32 years of experience in education, which has included 19 years as a vice-principal at the junior high, middle and high school levels.
For the past eight years, he has served as the Student Engagement Consultant for Lethbridge School Division, a leadership role where Kerr has worked closely with all stakeholders to best support student engagement with their education from Grade 1 through Grade 12.
Throughout his career, Kerr has consistently demonstrated the ability to build strong, trusting relationships with students, staff, families and community partners. He is a collaborative problem-solver who prioritizes creating supportive environments where everyone feels safe, valued and empowered to thrive.
“I am excited about the opportunity to work at Coalbanks and to make a meaningful impact during this critical stage in a child’s development,” said Kerr. “What draws me in most is being part of the Coalbanks community, where relationships, collaboration and a shared commitment to student success are clearly valued. I am eager to work alongside staff to help foster a collaborative school culture rooted in mutual respect, high expectations and shared growth. I’m committed to supporting students, families and staff — solving problems, celebrating successes and building strong relationships that strengthen the entire community. Above all, I want to contribute to a school where every child feels they belong and can learn. I believe in the power of a connected, inclusive environment to help all students thrive.”
An educator who takes the time to truly understand each family's unique story, Kerr’s restorative approach has allowed him to tailor support strategies that positively and effectively impact student learning and well-being.
Kerr has served as a vice-principal at Gilbert Paterson Middle School, G.S. Lakie Middle School and Hamilton Junior High. He started his teaching career in Horizon School Division.
“As vice-principal, I am eager to contribute to the strong foundation of support, collaboration and care already present in the school community,” he said. “I aim to be a visible and approachable leader — someone who listens with empathy, acts with fairness, and helps sustain a culture where students, families and staff feel safe, supported, respected and empowered. I look forward to building on the school’s strengths by supporting innovative practices that promote a positive environment, student well-being and a shared sense of purpose — through a restorative approach, inclusive leadership and proactive problem solving. I want to help deepen the school’s commitment to developing meaningful relationships and a strong culture of learning. Above all, I’m committed to helping foster a school climate where instructional excellence is the norm, and every student receives the support they need to thrive — academically, socially, and emotionally.”
Kerr has a Bachelor of Education degree and a Master’s of Education degree with a focus on Educational Leadership from the University of Lethbridge.
