Grade 1 Galbraith student recognized with 2024 Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award
On Monday, a Grade 1 student from Galbraith Elementary School was recognized at the Alberta School Boards Association 2024 Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award ceremony.
Sturgis Big Bull earned the honour for his infectious enthusiasm for acquiring knowledge, which has inspired both his classmates and educators alike.
According to the backgrounder found on the ASBA website, Big Bull is not afraid to take risks to facilitate his learning and embraces challenges and views them as opportunities for growth. He proudly embraces and celebrates his Blackfoot identity. Not only does he know the Blackfoot prayer but also confidently shared it in front of the entire school during a Treaty 7 Day event.
He says one of the best things about being Blackfoot is the food (his favourites are jerky and fry bread) and being in nature.
The awards were presented at the Queen Elizabeth II Building in Edmonton. Big Bull and the other 11 award winners were selected from 230 nominees. The award-winning students exemplify remarkable leadership, courage and dedication to their cultures and educational journeys.
The 12 recipients from Kindergarten to Grade 12 across Alberta were nominated by members of their educational communities for their exceptional contributions.
“This award is a testament to the remarkable resilience, strength and determination of Indigenous students across Alberta,” said Marilyn Dennis, president, ASBA. “Each recipient has not only excelled academically but has also demonstrated exceptional leadership, courage, and dedication, inspiring us all. We are honored to recognize their accomplishments and support their continued educational journeys as they pave the way for future generations.”
Each award recipient was presented with:
- An award certificate and congratulatory letter
-A unique handcrafted Star Blanket;
- A one-time scholarship, sponsored by Keyera.
Keyera, a proud sponsor of the awards, provided a $2,500 scholarship to each recipient to acknowledge their achievements and support their educational journeys.
“We are inspired by the 2024 Honouring Spirit Award recipients’ passion, strength and leadership,” said Christy Elliott, Senior Vice President, Sustainability, External Affairs and General Counsel. “Our team at Keyera is proud to celebrate alongside them as we recognize their invaluable contributions to their communities. We hope the Keyera scholarship supports them in continuing their educational journeys and encourages them to pursue their dreams.”
