Probe students design donuts in unique collaboration with Tim Horton's

On Wednesday, nine Dr. Probe Elementary School students had an opportunity to see their dream donuts come to life.
Stefa and Brian Pynn, owners of three westside Tim Horton’s locations, collaborated with nine Probe classes on a creative-writing competition, Designing a Donut, which allowed students to put their creativity to the test.
“We have two kids in elementary school, and we’re always just thinking about ways to make learning fun,” said Stefa Pynn. “We thought this would be a real fun way to do that, and it turned out to be really successful.”
Students submitted 190 ideas for delectable donuts, as the Tim Horton’s owners were given the tough task of choosing which donuts its stores would create for the students.
The winners were recognized Wednesday, as the Pynns dropped off treats for each class.
“We had one class, and they were literally chanting for the winner,” said Pynn. “It was so heartwarming.”
Only so many students could see their actual donut come to life, but Pynn added there were a host of creative ideas submitted.
“We even had a hot dog donut,” said Pynn. “You name it, and the students submitted it.”
There is even a possibility, down the road, that some of the donut ideas may one day make it to customers via the Tim Horton’s Baker’s Choice initiative. But for now, the nine winners had to settle for seeing their classmates enjoy their tasty creations.
To participate in the contest, students were tasked with planning and writing a paragraph about their donut to hook the reader. They then provided specific details and were asked to clearly communicate what their “dream donut” would be, and why it should be made.
“Tim Hortons decided the submissions were so good they would select a winner from each class that submitted entries,” said Dr. Probe principal Keith VanDerMeer. “The winner had their donut come to life, and every student in the class got to enjoy it.”
The classes that participated, and the winner in each class, is listed below:
Mrs. Probe – Zackary
Ms. Reddekopp – Josefa
Mrs. Day – Kinza
Mrs. Dixon – Shae
Mrs. Howg – Adrian
Mrs. Cunningham – Kira
Mrs. Wilkinson – Bella and Caralysa
Mr. Tuck – Lochlann
Mr. J. Campbell – Ashlynn
