Coalbanks hosts Slow Your Roll awareness event
On Friday, Coalbanks Elementary School played host to an awareness event for Slow Your Roll.
The initiative was developed in memory of Charles Douglas McIntyre, who lost his life due to an unfortunate motor vehicle collision.
Local realtor Chris DiPasquale, founded the #slowyourroll campaign in 2020 to get drivers to slow down, drive safely and be aware of children playing. DiPasquale designed and distributed lawn signs, shirts, hats and decals for donations to support the Mindful Munchies program at the Lethbridge Food Bank. After connecting with the family, a green heart was added in memory of Charles.
This year the McIntyre family, DiPasquale and the YMCA are joining together to revitalize #slowyourroll, so Charles’s memory continues forever.
Coalbanks invited members of the community to the school on Friday to learn more about Slow Your Roll, and show support for the Charles McIntyre Fund and the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta.
"The Slow Your Roll campaign is something that lost momentum during the pandemic, and Coalbanks Elementary School wants to re-establish the importance of drivers being aware when children are playing in various areas and reminding drivers the importance of slowing down where children might be playing," said Coalbanks principal Joey Gentile.
Members of the McIntyre family were in attendance, along with Cody Hall, a local musician who has written a song to promote the Slow Your Roll campaign.
Coalbanks brought its student population outside the front of the school on Coalbanks Boulevard to re-launch the campaign in the school community, and to listen to the song performed by Hall.
