Dr. Probe student earns 2023 Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award
A Lethbridge School Division Grade 4 student has taken home a prestigious award.
On April 15, at the Alberta School Boards Association’s (ASBA) 2023 Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Awards ceremony at Government House, 12 exceptional First Nations, Métis and Inuit students, selected from 224 nominees, were recognized.
Dr. Probe Elementary School student Jordyn Davis was recognized in the Grades 4-6 category.
Davis has been very influential in sharing her Blackfoot culture, language and traditions with her peers and teachers. Davis has taken it upon herself to share her language and culture, as she has displayed pride and confidence in her culture and knowledge of her people.
Opokaa'sin Early Intervention Society helped instill a strong cultural foundation and provided Davis a sense of belonging and a safe space to learn and grow academically and culturally. Davis has attended Opokaa'sin since she was six months old, and has attended play programs, childcare, head start, Kindergarten and now the Apai'pookaiksi after-school program.
The April 15 ceremony included remarks from the Honourable Salma Lakhani, AOE B.Sc., LLD (Hon), Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, the Honourable Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Education and ASBA President Marilyn Dennis.
Recipients in Kindergarten to Grade 12 from across Alberta were nominated by members of their education communities, based on their exemplary leadership, courage and commitment to their cultures and educational paths.
These awards are presented annually to First Nations, Métis or Inuit student nominees who attend a school in Alberta operated by an ASBA member school board. Each recipient is recognized with an award certificate and congratulatory letter, a unique hand-crafted Star Blanket and a one-time scholarship, sponsored by Keyera.
As a five-year sponsor of the 2022-2026 awards, Keyera will be providing a one-time $2,500 scholarship to each student recipient to acknowledge their achievements and support their educational journeys. The awards were also sponsored this year by Alberta Education.
There were three regions throughout the province (north, central and south), with four award categories in each region. There was one award issued for each grade category in each of the three regions, for a total of 12 awards.
