Division Trustee receives Queen’s Platinum Jubilee medal

A Lethbridge School Division Trustee received a special honour Tuesday evening during the Board of Trustees meeting.
Kristina Larkin was awarded a Queen’s Platinum Jubilee medal, as Shannon Phillips, MLA for Lethbridge-West, made the presentation.
“This is to pay tribute to someone in our community that has given up their time and talents in service to Lethbridge, to the Province of Alberta and to our great country,” said Phillips.
Alberta’s Platinum Jubilee Medal has been created to mark the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal is a tangible way for Alberta to honour Her Majesty’s service to Canada.
“Her late Majesty expressed her wish that Jubilee events be an occasion for enjoying a sense of togetherness,” said Phillips, who added medal presentations are also designed to portray a sense of optimism about the future, which made Tuesday’s event even more meaningful. “Her tremendous achievements have really been in service to the kind of future that we are all building together.”
Phillips highlighted Larkin’s community work, volunteerism and her interactions with people in Lethbridge over the past decade.
“She of course, as we know, works for the YMCA of Lethbridge. She has contributed to dozens of organizations, including as an elected Trustee of Lethbridge School Division. In particular, this Queen’s Jubilee recognition is for her work working in mutual aid during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Phillips added Larkin worked very closely with the COVID-19 support circle, which brought assistance to thousands of people at a time they needed it the most.
“When there was so much uncertainly for so many people, when vulnerable people really felt like the world in many ways was conspiring against them, Kristina Larkin was there to help, in whatever way that was needed to be done.”
The Lethbridge-West MLA went on to say Larkin’s efforts had a profound impact on many people’s lives, and made sure many more families, kids and ordinary people got through that difficult time.
Larkin was thankful for the honour, and for the opportunity to have the medal presented during a Board meeting.
“Being a Trustee is certainly an honour of a lifetime, to support my community in this way, and I believe that this role, for all of us, represents the trust that our community has in each of us.”
The Medal program is part of the Platinum Jubilee year celebrations, organized by the Government of Alberta.
The Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal is being awarded to 7,000 Albertans in recognition of significant contributions to the province. The Platinum Jubilee Medal program continued as planned despite the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and will conclude on Feb. 5, 2023.
