LCI mixed curling team wins gold medal in Drayton Valley

The Lethbridge Collegiate Institute mixed curling home brought home the gold medal from the 2024 ASAA Provincial Curling Championship in Drayton Valley.
LCI came into the tournament as the 10th seed and earned a wildcard entry into Pool B of the draw.
But that low ranking didn’t stop LCI from sweeping the competition in the playoff round, as the Lethbridge outfit defeated H.J. Cody 7-4 in the semifinals, then defeated Dr. Anne Anderson by a score of 6-4 in the final. LCI led from start to finish in the contest.
In pool play, LCI took out Holy Rosary by a score of 8-4, defeated Sexsmith 5-3 and dropped games against Dr. Anne Anderson (8-5) and Roland Michener (10-3).
That was good enough for second place in Pool B, as the 2-2 LCI team won out on a tiebreaker against 2-2 Sexsmith. In the tiebreaker, LCI won by the narrowest of margins, by a single point, which had to be measured. In the end, LCI’s stone was less than a quarter of an inch closer than the Sexsmith stone. That win set up a semifinal with the top team in Pool A, H.J. Cody.
LCI’s team consisted of Art Andizo, Kale Higginson, Kamille de Jong, Liv Swift and Rhett Whittmire, along with coaches David Fletcher, Cory Hoffner and Zach Rhodes.
