Dr. Robert Plaxton Elementary School receives LEED Gold certification

The Division has been notified that Dr. Robert Plaxton Elementary School has received LEED Gold certification.
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and is awarded by the Canadian Green Building Council. During the design and construction process, there are increasing requirements for each level of LEED certification to be achieved.
A special plaque will be installed in the school to celebrate this Gold Level plateau.

Information related to the Certification from CAGBC:
LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building, home or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: location and transportation, sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
There are a number of LEED® rating systems available to meet the needs of different building and project types. Each LEED rating system consists of prerequisites and credits. Prerequisites are required elements, or green building strategies that must be included in any LEED certified project. Credits are optional elements, or strategies that projects can elect to pursue to gain points toward LEED certification.

The school division was required to obtain a minimum certification of LEED Silver, and is pleased the GOLD Certification was awarded. Meeting these high standards in energy and environmental design is important to the Division.
Dr. Robert Plaxton Elementary School has adopted further Environmental Stewardship philosophies in I’s operation. This philosophy, the illustration above graphically demonstrates how the school's regular operations are carried out in an environmentally sensitive way, as well as developing a culture of environmental stewardship within the school community.
