Division students attend E3's Harvesting Ambitions - Young Women in Agriculture event

Lethbridge School Division students had a unique opportunity on Thursday.
Through the Southern Alberta Collegiate Institute's E3 initiative (Explore, Engage and Experience), Grade 7 to Grade 9 students from Chinook High School, Gilbert Paterson Middle School, Immanuel Christian Secondary School, Lethbridge Christian School and Lethbridge Collegiate Institute visited Lethbridge Polytechnic for Harvesting Ambitions - Young Women in Agriculture.
The one-day career exploration event was designed to inspire young women in southern Alberta by exposing them to diverse career paths in agriculture.
Paterson's group of Knowledge and Employability students began the day with an engaging panel discussion featuring four women in trades who shared their career journeys and insights. The students then toured the impressive facilities at Lethbridge Polytechnic, and gained a firsthand look at the diverse programs offered. A highlight of the morning was the buffet lunch provided by the Culinary Institute.
The afternoon featured hands-on workshops in various fields. The girls dissected a grasshopper, examined a mushroom under a microscope, designed a business plan for an agricultural invention and created and analyzed their own microscope slides with leaves.
"Each activity provided a unique opportunity to explore practical skills and connect classroom learning to real-world applications," said Shelby Johnson, Grade 7 and Grade 8 Knowledge & Employability teacher at Paterson. "This event offered the students not only a chance to experience a professional conference but also to step outside their comfort zones and discover exciting career possibilities. The day was a resounding success and a powerful reminder of the importance of encouraging young women to explore diverse and innovative futures."
