Chinook student takes gold medal in 2024 Provincial Skills Canada Competition

Earlier this month, a student from Chinook High School took home first place in the 2024 Provincial Skills Canada Competition.
Chinook’s Tate McGarry earned the gold medal in Cabinet Making, and as a result, has qualified to represent Team Alberta at Nationals on May 30-31 in Quebec City.
The Edmonton Expo Centre played host to the provincial competition on May 8-9, as McGarry was tasked with constructing a cabinet project which contained slatted side frames with curved lower rails as well as arched bracket details. The drawer was to feature hand-cut dovetail joinery and contest instructions indicated the top had a include solid edging mitred with all four corners.
Projects were judged on criteria that included overall dimensions, detail dimensions, case joinery and assembly, lower frame joined and assembly, surface preparation and a drawing reading quiz.
