Tri-High Theatre for Young Audiences Festival wows audiences

On Monday morning at Chinook High School, audiences gathered for the annual Tri-High Theatre for Young Audiences Festival.
Chinook High School, Lethbridge Collegiate Institute and Winston Churchill High School showcased a theatre for young audience performances that ran approximately 90 minutes. Shows ran on Monday at 9:30 a.m. and again at 12:30 p.m.
Shows will also run Tuesday, March 25 at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Chinook performed, Evelyn the (Almost) Great, a story adapted to a TYA script by the talented Grade 12 student Kennedy Chinn. This story follows a young witch named Evelyn. Evelyn attends Moonvales academy school and struggles academically and socially to keep up with her witch-mates. Things change for Evelyn when she meets two fellow outcasts, and they form a friendship. Through this journey she learns about how to ask for help and find her own path in school.
LCI students performed, Just Like Us, by Craig Sodaro.
The school's Advanced Acting class has been focused on how theatre can be used as a tool for social awareness. Through the simple metaphor how the Blues and the Greens don't get along, the play explored how prejudice can keep people apart and how though embracing our differences we can all become stronger.
The 17 actors in the production have been working on this play since the beginning of the semester, while the Grade 9 Technical Theatre class created all the props and set pieces for the production.
WCHS performed, Ribbon Rescue, as the Drama 2030 class transformed Robert Munsch’s story into a lively stage play for elementary audiences. Through creative storytelling, colourful costumes and audience interaction, they brought the tale of Jillian and her ribbon-filled adventures to life.
The students worked together to adapt the story into a script, and incorporated playful movement and dynamic characters to engage young viewers. Students have been led through this process by Churchill's current PS II student, Jess Schnell.
