Speaker talks to Davidson students about his transition from South Africa to Saskatchewan

Monday morning at École Agnes Davidson, students had the opportunity to hear from a guest speaker.
Christian Mbanza, a teacher and speaker from Saskatchewan, shared his story of coming to Canada from South Africa as a young, black student, in a town where there were no other students in his class like him.
Last year, Mbanza spoke to Agnes Davidson students about the shame he felt about his traditional name and his clothing, because it was so different than anyone else. This time around, he brought a message about not being ashamed of your differences, but rather allowing them to give you power. He also led a role-playing game with the student body to demonstrate being powerful and being.
Mbanza spoke about Martin Luther King Jr. and Jim Crow laws and shared with students the difference between using your power for good or for bad.
Mbanza will also be at The Owl Tuesday evening presenting at an event hosted by the Local 41 DEHR committee. The event, Empowering Educators to Cultivate Diverse Classrooms, is geared towards educators and members of the public and is titled. This will be the second installment of DEHR's speaker series (Katie DeLucia-Burk on Being an Ally in November), and another will follow in May on Indigenous Ways of Knowing.
