Province announces new elementary school for west Lethbridge

Lethbridge School Division is excited to receive news on the Government of Alberta's announcement regarding approval of a new K-5 elementary school in west Lethbridge.
This will help kick off the first phase of the journey to build the school in west Lethbridge. The approval for the new school means the Division can start hiring architectural consultants for the design. The Division will now work with City of Lethbridge and developers in regards to the development of a site in Garry Station.
A new elementary school has been the number one capital priority for the Division for the last four years, with the recognition the north end of west Lethbridge is a growing community. There have also been significant enrolment pressures on both Mike Mountain Horse Elementary School and Coalbanks Elementary School, which opened in 2017.
The new school could open in September 2025 at the earliest, depending on planning, site preparation and the date of approval for construction by the province.
Although the Division has received approval for a new school, this does not change fact the Division needs to move ahead with boundary changes, due to current capacity in our westside schools and continued anticipated growth in the west over the next five years.
With that in mind, the announcement from the province is a welcomed development for the Division.
"We appreciate the government has recognized our very serious need for a new elementary school in west Lethbridge, given the growth pressures our schools have experienced," said Lethbridge School Division Board of Trustees Chair Christine Light. "The Board is extremely pleased the government has heard our concerns and is moving ahead with a much-needed project for our Division."
