Alberta Esports Championship 2024 underway in Lethbridge

The Alberta Esports Championship 2024 is underway at the Lethbridge Agri-Food Hub & Trade Centre.
The tournament is open to all students aged 10-18 as of Sept. 1, 2023, and will feature two distinct categories. The first is the open category, welcoming students of appropriate ages who do not belong to an organized and sanctioned school esports team. Entrants in this category must be accompanied by a guardian or coach who is at least 21 years old. The second category is reserved for school-sanctioned teams, specifically catering to educational institutions with competitive esports teams.
Featured games include Super Smash Bros, Rocket League, Omega Strikers, League of Legends and Valorant.
Play kicked off today at 3 p.m. but before that, dignitaries were on stage for the opening ceremonies, directed by Lethbridge School Division’s Johny Mantello.
Christine Lee, Associate Superintendent of Business and Operations for the Division, led the Land acknowledgement, while Johanna Zieber, student from Winston Churchill High School, performed the national anthem.  
Mike Nightingale (Superintendent of Lethbridge School Division), Mike Bruised Head (Chairman, Kainai Board of Education) and Allison Purcell, (Chair, Board of Trustees, Lethbridge School Division (also brought greetings.  
Joseph Schow (Alberta’s Minister of Tourism and Sport), Nathan Neudorf (Minister of Affordability and Utilities), Amanda Chapman (MLA for Calgary-Beddington) and Lethbridge Mayor Blaine Hyggen also spoke at the opening ceremonies.
