Each and every day, inspiration can be found inside the walls of our schools.
It’s not everyday, however, when an elementary-school student inspires her entire school.
On Monday morning, Grade 3 Dr. Probe Elementary School student Roshelle Daniels was given an award for doing exactly that. Daniels was given an Honourable Mention for the Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Awards, intended to recognize First Nations, Métis and Inuit students who model strength and commitment in the pursuit of their personal education path and embrace their own gifts, strengths and potential while celebrating the ways of their people.
École Nicholas Sheran teacher, Megan Lewis, who taught Daniels in Grade 2 last year, nominated Daniels for the award.
“She is an extremely-kind young lady with the biggest heart,” said Lewis. “She is just such a good friend. She's very resilient, she’s tough and very driven and very passionate. When she was an idea, she wants to get that idea done.”
Last year, Daniels spent time at the Opokaa'sin Early Intervention Society, where the young students learned Blackfoot words with elders. Daniels took that knowledge and not only taught classmates a few words, but also led the entire school in a Blackfoot prayer during an assembly.
Lewis added Daniels also started a FNMI student group at Nicholas Sheran, and provided assistance with activities such as Orange Shirt day and Rock Your Mocs.
“She was an advocate and student leader at Nicholas Sheran last year,” said Lewis.
Lethbridge School Division Board Chair Christine Light presented Daniels with her Honourable Mention for the award.
“I just want to say, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, how proud I am of you,” said Light. “You have inspired your teachers, and this is one of the qualities that this award celebrates – your inspiration of others.”
That inspiration was a key factor in the nomination for the award.
“Your leadership and your gifts inspired Mrs. Lewis and it inspired your peers in your class, and in your leadership in the gym, you inspired your whole school, and I just think that is such a magical and amazing thing.”
