Coalbanks hands out inaugural Charles Douglas McIntyre Memorial Award for Perseverance

On Thursday afternoon, the Charles Douglas McIntyre Memorial Award for Perseverance was handed out for the very first time. 
The award, designed to honour McIntyre, who passed away suddenly on April 13, 2020 at the age of 10, was handed out for the 2019/2020 school year to Emmett Leavitt.
Coalbanks Elementary School principal Joey Gentile and Coalbanks Grade 4/5 teacher Mike Wevers were on hand to present the award to Leavitt, a student Gentile said has demonstrated persistence, determination, patience, stamina, stick-to-it-iveness and grit across all subject areas.
The award is also meant to recognize a student who has exemplified self-motivation, has increased self-confidence and has chosen a positive path by overcoming challenging obstacles. 
McIntyre's family was also on hand to help present the award, to honour their son, Charles, who was described as an accomplished student and conscientious leader. He was a witty, kind, passionate, loyal and patient friend, who did not work for recognition or for popularity, but for the sake of his own pride.
The Charles Douglas McIntyre Memorial Award for Perseverance aims to encourage students to carry on Charles' spirit and zest for living.
