Four locals recognized with LCI Distinguished Achievement Awards

A quartet of worthy recipients were recognized Friday at the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Distinguished Achievement Awards.

The program recognizes individuals who have attended LCI before moving on to accomplish significant achievements, or who have made noteworthy contributions to the school, to education in general or to the larger community.

The awards program identifies individuals for their achievements, and then recognizes those selected with the placement of a special plaque on the Wall of Distinction in the school’s main hallway.

The 2019 recipients included Mark and Robyn Jones, Dr. Daren Heyland and Ingrid Hess.

Mark and Robyn Jones both graduated LCI in 1980. Robyn is the founder of Goosehead Insurance, and is currently a director and the company, along with vice-chairman.

Her husband, Mark, is Goosehead’s chairman and CEO. The couple just took Goosehead public on the NASDAQ stock exchange, as the company earned a valuation of over $1 billion.  

Goosehead has expanded throughout the United States, with around 400 franchises to date

Heyland currently serves as the director of the Clinical Evaluation Research Unit (CERU) at the Kingston General Hospital, which functions as a methods centre for multicentre clinical research

For over a decade, he chaired the Canadian Researchers at the End of Life Network (CARENET), which has a focus on developing and evaluating strategies to improve communication and decision-making at the end of life

Heyland has published approximately 300 peer-reviewed papers and raised more than $100 million in

Ingrid Hess, a specialist in Criminal Law Defence, earned praise as a defence attorney in a first-degree murder case which involved a man with FASD.

She also represented claimants in the Independent Assessment Process under the Settlement Agreement for the class action lawsuit for Indian Residential Schools. Hess was instrumental in building a case against against a lawyer who was ultimately banned from practising on Independent Assessment Process cases and later disbarred.
