Speaker Series at public library to focus on legalization of cannabis

The Up in Smoke speaker series will bring a number of experts this month to discuss the upcoming legalization of cannabis.

Those interested in what this means for Lethbridge and local families, will have two opportunities to take in special presentations, hosted inside the Theatre Gallery in the main branch of the Lethbridge Public Library.

April 19 will feature Cannabis and the Law, presented by Ethan Bayne, the executive director of Strategy and Planning from the Alberta Cannabis Secretariat.

Bayne will speak about Alberta’s Cannabis Framework, which will include an overview of the legislation and regulations that will manage legalized cannabis in the province.

The Alberta Cannabis Secretariat was established in early 2017 by the government to examine the issue, and develop a system based upon input from the public. More information can be found at www.alberta.ca/cannabis

Cannabis and Youth will be presented on April 26, as Chris Windle (health promotion facilitator with Alberta Health Services Addiction and Mental Health) and Courtney Barks (adolescent addictions counsellor) will speak.

The presentation will centre around how parents, teachers and community members can speak to children and teens about cannabis. It will focus on how to initiate conversations with youth, answer questions and help build protective factors and resiliency.
