District basketball teams prepare for 2A and 4A provincial tournaments

Four Lethbridge School District No. 51 basketball teams have earned spots in the provincial party this weekend.

The Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Clippers and Rams will head to Medicine Hat High School on Thursday to compete in the 4A provincial championship, while the Immanuel Christian Secondary School Eagles boys will make the trek to Claresholm and the Eagles girls will be at Kainai High School.

The ICSS Eagles girls team is the only District team to enter provincials as zone champions, as the Eagles swept through the 2A zone tournament, which included a 72-58 win in the championship game at Lethbridge College over Kainai.

ICSS defeated F.P. Walshe 73-25 and Kate Andrews 58-39 en route to the title.

The Eagles girls enter provincials with a  first-round bye. ICSS will play Friday a 2:15 p.m. at Kainai High School, against the winner of Thursday’s Glenmary School/Assumption Junior/Senior High School contest.

The Eagles boys teams head to provincials as zone silver medalists, after an 80-71 loss to Willow Creek in the final. ICSS advanced to the final after a 106-42 win over County Central and a 78-67 win over Kainai in the semifinal.

The boys will take on Holy Redeemer High School Thursday at 3:45 p.m. in the team’s opener at Willow Creek Composite High School.

The LCI Rams enter provincials at the No. 8 seed, and will take on No. 9 Ross Sheppard on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Crescent Heights High School gym.

LCI took second in the 4A zone tournament, as the Rams fell 79-63 to Magrath in the championship game Saturday night at the University of Lethbridge.

The LCI Clippers take a No. 7 ranking into provincials. LCI will face NO. 10 Leduc at 4 p.m. on Thursday, also in the CHHS gym.

LCI won the 4A zone consolation final with a 69-65 win over Cardston, Saturday afternoon at the U of L.
