School edition of Les Miserables set for Dec. 5-9 at Chinook High School

Chinook High School Music Theatre Studies 15/25/35 classes are set to present, Les Miserables - School Edition.

The School Edition is a curricular class workshop production of Les Miserables, a slightly abridged version of the iconic musical by Schonberg and Boublil, based on Victor Hugo's classic novel.

“While abridged, the musical is still 355 pages of musical score, which accounts for well over two hours of sung story telling by students,” said David Mikuliak, who teaches Drama, Choir and Musical Theatre at Chinook. “Those who love the musical Les Miserables will not be disappointed by the version released for educational study and production by Music Theatre International specifically for high school students.”

Chinook has run the Music Theatre Studies 15/25/35 production class as a daily class in the school’s regular rotation of daily option classes this term. Students selected and registered for the class last spring. Students did not have to audition to be a participant in the course.

“The class features 65 incredibly diverse and talented students,” said Mikuliak. “Studying this great work has led students to have a greater understanding of the collective process through group audition, historical context study and division of creative responsibility in the many and varied aspects of bringing a large production to performance on stage.”

Beyond stage roles, students have taken on lead roles in lighting design, stage management, costume design, scenic design, movement, peer vocal coaching and marketing.

Les Miserables - School Edition, runs from Tuesday, Dec. 5 to Saturday, Dec. 9 in the 340-seat Chinook High School Media Centre/Theatre, with curtain nightly at 7 p.m. The ticket price is $10.

“Those looking for an affordable evening to view live music theatre performed and sung by extremely talented young people, this show is definitely for you,” said Mikuliak.

To avoid disappointment, in the event of a sellout on any given evening, it is suggested patrons purchase tickets in advance at School Cash Online, or by contacting the Textbook Centre at Chinook High School at 430-320-7565.
