ICSS Eagles win ASAA 2A boys volleyball provincial championship

The Immanuel Christian Secondary School Eagles boys volleyball team is on top of the 2A sports world.

ICSS won the Alberta Schools Athletic Association provincial championship Saturday in Taber, as the Eagles defeated West Island College in the gold-medal game.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the guys on how they played throughout the weekend, and specifically in the championship game," said ICSS coach Nathan Watson. "We’re a young team, so there was definite nervousness surrounding the finals, but the guys handled the pressure well, kept focussed and played an aggressive match from start to finish."

Saturday's championship contest was the first time in school history the Eagles had ever played in an ASAA volleyball provincial final.

"It was exciting to witness the guys make history for our school and bring home the provincial banner," said Watson, who added throughout the year, the goal was to get better each and every time the team hit the court. "Each day of practice this season, we asked the guys to push themselves to get better, and winning gold on Saturday night was the culmination of all the hard work they’ve put in this season. Again, I couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve accomplished.”

Immanuel Christian beat La Crete Public School in the semifinal, as the Eagles swept through the playoffs en route to an undefeated weekend.

In pool play, the Eagles defeated J.R. Robson High (25-20, 15-25, 15-13), Our Lady of Mount Pleasant (25-19, 21-25, 15-11), Rundle College (25-20, 25-21), Taber St. Mary’s (25-21, 25-17) and Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (32-30, 25-20) to finish with a 5-0 record.

The team includes Ryan Degner, Wade Withage, Justin Withage, Levi Vroom, Steven Veldman, Seth Leenstra, Nathan Hall, Kyle Elgersma and Andy Ravelojaona, and was coached by Nathan Watson.
