Sock it to ‘Em campaign's 15th year set to benefit four local charities

The Sock it to ‘Em campaign is back for a 15th year.

Retired Lethbridge School District No. 51 staff member Gail Petrie has been instrumental in co-ordinating the Sock it to ‘Em campaign for the past 14 years. Supported by members of CUPE 290 in the District, as well as Holy Spirit and Palliser school divisions, Petrie has been instrumental in securing participation by students and staff in the schools and asking for donations of socks, which are distributed to four community support organizations. Those charities include the Salvation Army, Harbour House, Woods Homes (the Teen Shelter) and the Homeless Shelter.

In the last 14 years, over 108,000 pairs of socks have been collected.

Caretakers and maintenance staff in the three participating school divisions have been instrumental in assisting with the collecting of the socks, according to Petrie, who added school administrators have also

supported the initiative. Students and staff in the schools have also contributed greatly over the years during the campaign in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

The Lethbridge School District No. 51 Board of trustees also chipped in this year, as the Board made a $100 donation during the Oct. 25 regular meeting of the Board.

For more information on the campaign, contact Petrie at 403-327-6520 or Stay-c Covey at 403-929-5450. Monetary donations can be made payable to CUPE Local 290, with a note specifying it is for Sock it to ‘Em. Donations can be sent to PO Box 33009, RPO Uplands, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1H 5P2.
