KAIROS Canada Blanket Activity at Fleetwood takes students back in time

Earlier this month, Mrs. Redman’s Grade 4/5 Montessori class at Fleetwood-Bawden Elementary School participated in the KAIROS Canada Blanket Activity, organized and facilitated by their Professional Semester 3 Intern Teacher, Miss Thompson, along with FNMI Liaison, Mrs. Plain Eagle.

The activity used blankets to represent the land that is now referred to as Canada. Students were taken back in time, and walked through the history of Canada. They learned about the arrival of Europeans, the history of treaty making, colonization, assimilation and diseases that impacted the Indigenous people, as well as residential schools.

After the activity was complete, students engaged in a Circle Chat reflection.

“I was impressed with how quickly the students were able to not only grasp these concepts but also recognize the important life lessons that history provides us with,” said Thompson. “Watching students make connections to Canada’s past, influencing how we tolerate, included and acknowledge those around us was truly inspiring. Overall, this lesson was extremely powerful and meaningful to all students in our class, as it has left an impact on our classroom community.”
