Visiting artist helping Westminster students develop Canada 150 project

Karen Watson, an artist, illustrator and visual-effects compositor, is currently participating as a visiting artist at Westminster Elementary School.

Watson, who has worked as an artist in the film and television industry, began to pursue the art of illustration in 2006, as her whimsical, fairytale style lent itself well to children’s books. A proud member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, her latest work can be found in author Elizabeth Lorayne’s book, The Adventures of Pirtess Tilly.

This week at Westminster, Watson is working with Westminster students to teach them artistic techniques for their Explore Canada Like A Pirate books. Each student will write a page, and then illustrate that page with Watson's guidance. The pages will be put into a book that represents a certain physical region of Canada.

As Canada celebrates its 150th birthday, Westminster Elementary School will have seven classbooks, written and illustrated by the students, to give to the school library.

Watson is the illustrator of The Adventures of Pirtess Tilly, and her work has been published in several children's publications.
