Architects Present Designs for West Lethbridge Middle School

Representatives from Ferrari Westwood Babits Architects revealed the floor plans of the new school at the Board meeting.

The new West Lethbridge Middle School will be a 6,570m2 core school facility planned for the Waterbridge neighbourhood. The school core will accommodate 900 students in grades 6 to 8.

The project will achieve a LEED Silver certification, and has a construction budget of over $25,000,000.

The development of the school will incorporate planning strategies in support of Alberta Education’s Inspiring Education mandate, including a Library Learning Commons, Project-Based Learning Centre, and a series of flexible student collaboration spaces.

The heart of the school will be developed around a large Gathering Space which will provide a community hub for the school flanked by the Drama Room, Band Room, Library-Learning Commons and Administration Spaces. Also located off the Gathering Space will be an over 800m2, 3-station Gymnasium which will be supported by a separate Fitness Room.

In addition, the new facility will provide a Career and Technology Studies (CTS) Wood Shop, CTS Foods Space, as well as a flexible CTS module to support programs such as Fashion Studies or Video Editing, as well as providing flexibility for future developments in CTS or Career and Technology Foundations (CTF) programming.

Outdoor learning spaces will also be developed, including a series of semi-enclosed courtyards serving as outdoor classroom spaces, as well as a large outdoor patio space off the learning commons intended for both school and community use.

Over the coming months, Lethbridge School District No. 51 will continue to work with the consultants to ensure that the school is built for the 2018-19 school year.

The West Lethbridge Middle School project was one the 55 new schools and 20 modernization capital projects announced by the Alberta Government in October 2014.
