FastForward

Lethbridge School District #51 has developed an initiative for a High School Completion Recovery Program. It was developed with reference and attention to Alberta Education’s High School completion Strategy Framework, Fall 2009.

The ultimate goal of this initiative is to provide former high school students, who did not graduate, an opportunity to complete their high school education and receive an Alberta High School Diploma.

District high schools are key participants in this initiative, as well as a wide range of community agencies and local educational institutions. A district student support advisor (teaching professional) coordinates and delivers this program to eligible individuals over the age of sixteen, who have a desire and commitment to complete their high school education.

Each student, in cooperation with the Student Support Advisor will design an individual learning plan to support their high school completion. Goals and timelines are co-determined by the student and the Student Support Advisor. Future career and employment plans and post-secondary goals are discussed and incorporated into the current learning plan when feasible.

Lethbridge School District # 51 recognizes that achievement of a high school diploma contributes to the individual’s potential not only for personal economic viability, but also as valued contributing members of our community and Canadian society.

Components of the FastForward High School Completion Initiative

  1. Personalized Learning – is provided in a structured and responsive approach to each student’s abilities and interests. Students are helped to feel ownership of their participation, progress, and achievement.
  2. Successful Transitions – are built into the Student Learning Plan. Linkages between school and work; and then between high school completion and post-secondary training and/or education are addressed and supported.
  3. Collaborative Partnerships – with district high schools, community agencies, and educational institutions are established and encouraged for effective delivery of wrap-around services for students and their families.
  4. Positive Connections – are initiated and maintained to promote a sense of belonging, and reinforce regular attendance and motivation to learn.
  5. Tracking Progress – is an integral part of the structured monitoring of progress, motivation for completion, and opportunities to explore employment options and/or further studies at a post-secondary level.
  6. Celebration – and acknowledgement of each learning achievement is addressed; with the ultimate achievement being their AB High School Diploma.
